State Farm Urges Illinois Residents to Protect Against Frozen Pipes

State Farm Urges Illinois Residents to Protect Against Frozen Pipes

By Andi Anderson

State Farm, the insurance company, is issuing a warning to Illinois residents, urging them to take proactive steps to safeguard their homes against frozen pipes. Recent data from State Farm Insurance revealed that Illinois ranked second in the nation for the highest number of frozen pipe claims. Illinois homeowners filed over 2,800 claims, resulting in State Farm paying out a staggering $72.2 million due to frozen pipe-related damages.

From August 2022 to August 2023, State Farm faced an influx of more than 32,000 claims for frozen pipes, totaling payouts exceeding $806 million. Frozen pipes can occur when temperatures fall below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and can impact homes equipped with plastic or copper pipes.

The repercussions of frozen pipes can be severe—an 1/8" crack can dispense over 250 gallons of water per hour, leading to flooding and potential mold and structural damage within homes.

To prevent such issues, State Farm recommends several proactive measures for homeowners:

  • Insulate pipes in the attic or crawl spaces.
  • Utilize heat tape or thermostatically controlled heat cables around pipes.
  • Seal any leaks near pipes that allow cold air to enter.
  • Disconnect garden hoses and shut off and drain water from pipes connected to exterior faucets.
  • Allow warm water to drip overnight to prevent freezing.
  • Maintain a thermostat setting above 55 degrees, especially during extended absences.
  • Open cabinet doors to ensure heat reaches uninsulated pipes under sinks or near exterior walls.

In case pipes freeze or burst, here are some important steps:

  • If no water comes out of a faucet, leave it on and contact a plumber.
  • Never use an open flame to thaw pipes, as it poses a fire hazard.
  • A hairdryer can be used as a heat source away from water or flammable materials.
  • In the event of burst pipes, immediately turn off the main water shut-off valve; ensure all household members are aware of its location for emergencies.

State Farm emphasizes proactive measures as the key to avoiding costly damages caused by frozen pipes, encouraging residents to take preventive actions and be prepared in case of emergencies.
