On May 20, 2025, Willowthorne Farm will host an NRCS Field Day from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, offering small-scale urban growers a chance to learn about reimbursable conservation practices through hands-on education and expert guidance.
Willowthorne, a U-pick blueberry farm, will demonstrate conservation strategies including Micro-Irrigation Water Management, Forestry Management Planning, High Tunnel implementation, and Conservation Cover Planting. These practices are now accessible to urban and small-scale growers through the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).
Farmers Gosia and Mike will lead a tour of their farm, sharing firsthand experience about the NRCS contract process. They’ll offer practical advice on blueberry bush care, pruning techniques, and how to maintain existing farm systems with thoughtful care.
Attendees will also learn the basics of soil pH and fertility management—crucial knowledge for optimizing crop health and yield.
USDA NRCS Soil Conservationists Joseph Bridges and Alicia Lozano will be present to speak with attendees about program eligibility, application steps, and how NRCS can support sustainable farming goals.
This is a valuable opportunity for growers to network, ask questions, and connect with conservation professionals.
Participants are required to register in advance. Upon arrival, all attendees must sign a liability waiver. Please note that children under 5 are not permitted at the event.
This field day offers practical insights and guidance for growers interested in sustainable farming and conservation reimbursement programs. It’s an opportunity to learn directly from experienced farmers and USDA specialists in a supportive, hands-on setting.
