Northern Illinois gains new horticulture expert

By Andi Anderson

The University of Illinois Extension is excited to announce that Nancy Kuhajda, a familiar name in Will County, has stepped into a new role as horticulture educator.

With over twenty-two years of experience as an Extension program coordinator, Kuhajda is now bringing her expertise to serve Grundy, Kankakee, and Will counties.

Kuhajda will lead a variety of horticulture programs aimed at improving community engagement and quality of life through gardening.

Her extensive background in gardening education makes her well-equipped to address the evolving needs of local residents, whether they are new to horticulture or seasoned gardeners.

“I am passionate about connecting people to their environment through gardening,” says Kuhajda. “There are so many benefits to horticulture at every stage of life, and I’m excited to help more people in our community experience those benefits.”

Kuhajda has a strong track record of expanding programming to underserved communities, a priority she plans to continue in her new role. Her work will focus on reaching diverse groups, including urban youth, elderly residents, and people with disabilities, ensuring equitable access to horticulture education.

Kuhajda’s previous achievements include her collaboration with Union Elementary School, where she helped students learn about gardening through hands-on programming, culminating in the sale of plants grown by the students.

Her dedication to helping others grow their own food is a driving force in her work. “Growing your own food is a superpower,” she says. “It improves everyday life, and I’m committed to helping more people understand that.”

Under her leadership, Illinois Extension’s commitment to transformative education will continue, promoting sustainable gardening practices and building stronger communities across the region.
