The Western Illinois University (WIU) farm welcomed a new vertical mixer in December, an essential addition to support cattle feeding operations.
The equipment, acquired with financial assistance from the Illinois Farm Bureau and the collaborative efforts of Sydenstricker Noble Partners, aims to improve efficiency and reduce feed waste within the beef herd.
Each year, the Illinois Farm Bureau selects projects to fund at WIU’s School of Agriculture. This year, the vertical mixer was chosen as a priority item. WIU’s Director of Agriculture, Andrew Baker, highlighted its significance, stating, "This mixer will help us manage feed costs and prevent waste. The continued support from Illinois Farm Bureau ensures we have the necessary tools to provide practical learning experiences for our students."
After funding approval, WIU partnered with Sydenstricker Noble Partners to source and refurbish a vertical mixer tailored to their needs. The new equipment is expected to play a critical role in improving farm operations and teaching opportunities for students.
John Crubaugh, Director of Strategic Initiatives at Sydenstricker Noble Partners, expressed pride in supporting WIU’s agricultural program. "Helping WIU advance its program benefits the students and the community for years to come," he said.
The vertical mixer will enhance the farm’s ability to feed its cattle herd efficiently while reducing waste, offering a practical learning tool for students at the university.
This collaboration highlights the ongoing commitment of industry partners to support agricultural education and sustainability.
With this new addition, the WIU farm is well-positioned to continue its efforts in advancing agricultural practices and providing valuable hands-on experiences to its students.
