Mixed Reactions to Proposed Solar Farm in Mercer County

Mixed Reactions to Proposed Solar Farm in Mercer County

By Andi Anderson

A proposed solar farm project in Mercer County has ignited a debate among residents, as concerns over farmland preservation and property values take center stage.

On October 26, the Mercer County zoning commission convened a meeting with community members to delve into the details of the proposed solar farm project. The location for this solar farm would be in Alexis, Illinois, approximately a half-hour southeast of Aledo.

Birch Creek Energy is the driving force behind the initiative, with plans to build the solar farm and connect it to Ameren's power system. While the project has garnered support, some residents are expressing reservations regarding the potential loss of farmland.

One concerned neighbor revealed her commitment to the previous property owners to preserve the beauty of their land. She worried that the construction of a new solar farm could compromise the natural aesthetics of the area.

"We're being asked to accept this plan with very little respect for our rights. This is a feeling of loss, as if we were losing a family member, but our grief is because we're losing our home as we know it," lamented meeting attendee Renee Tadie.

Members of Birch Creek's staff were present at the meeting to address these concerns. They emphasized that the installation of solar panels would not result in noise pollution, stormwater issues, or negatively impact property values for neighbors.

Scott Novack, Birch Creek's director of Greenfield development, highlighted the potential economic benefits of the project. He stated that over the course of a 40-year lease term, the solar farm could contribute over $9 million in tax revenue. The school district would be the primary beneficiary, receiving a significant portion of those funds.

The Mercer County zoning commission is currently considering a "land use request" that would allow Birch Creek to proceed with the design work for the solar farm. Further discussions and a vote on this request are scheduled for their upcoming meeting on November 30.
