Central Illinois farmers are in the midst of harvest season, bringing in millions of bushels of corn and soybeans. The work is long and hard, but it's also a time for tradition and community.
Farmer Dan Magarity has been harvesting crops for decades. He says technology has changed a lot over the years, but the basic process remains the same. The combine cuts the stalks of the plants, separates the beans from the pods, and cleans them up.
The beans are then unloaded into a tractor-drawn bin and hauled to an elevator. The elevator is where the beans are weighed, graded, and stored.
Magarity says the weather is the biggest challenge during harvest season. Too much rain can make it difficult to get the crops out of the field, and too little rain can make them dry and brittle.
The challenges, Magarity says he loves harvest season. It's a time to work hard and see the fruits of his labor. And it's a time to come together with his family and community to get the job done.
