Learn Safe Produce Handling in Wash and Pack Areas

Learn Safe Produce Handling in Wash and Pack Areas

By Andi Anderson

Contamination in produce wash and pack areas is a major cause of foodborne illnesses. Even well-grown fruits and vegetables can become unsafe without proper handling after harvest.

To help farmers address this issue, the University of Illinois Extension is hosting a free educational webinar titled “Food Safety in Fresh Produce — Wash and Pack Areas.”

This session will offer practical, science-based strategies for reducing contamination risks during the post-harvest stage. It is ideal for farmers managing either small plots or larger operations. The event aims to protect consumers from illness and producers from financial losses.

The webinar will take place on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, from 4 to 5 p.m. Registration is free but required, with a deadline of Wednesday, September 3 at 5 p.m. Once registered, participants will receive an email with the access link.

Food safety educator Lillian Nabwiire encourages farmers to take a moment during the busy season to reflect on the importance of providing safe, healthy produce. “In this webinar, we will focus on protecting fresh fruits and vegetables from contamination after harvest,” she says.

Attendees will learn how to improve cleanliness in wash and pack zones, identify contamination sources, and implement effective sanitation procedures.

These practices can help reduce the risk of spreading bacteria, improve public trust, and support long-term farm success.

This informative session provides the tools farmers need to improve food safety and meet public health standards, making it a valuable opportunity for anyone handling fresh produce.
