Leadership Meets Innovation at Driftless Beef 2026

Leadership Meets Innovation at Driftless Beef 2026

By Andi Anderson

The 2026 Driftless Region Beef Conference invites cattle producers from Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin to join a two-day educational event in Dubuque, Iowa.

The goal of the conference is to help producers strengthen their knowledge, learn from experts, and connect with others facing similar challenges in the beef industry. Attendees can participate in keynote sessions, choose from several workshop topics, and take part in the popular Bull Pen discussion focused on reinvesting in the ranch.

Producers continue to see record cattle prices, but strong profits depend on smart decisions and attention to basic management practices.

This year’s conference focuses on practical tools, herd health, marketing strategies, and planning for the future. Participants can also meet with sponsors, explore new products and services, and network with fellow producers from across the Driftless Region.

The keynote session on practical biosecurity highlights how common diseases such as respiratory illness, neonatal diarrhea, BVD, and Johnes disease pose ongoing risks. The presenter explains simple steps producers can take to protect their herds.

Another session explores tick challenges, including the rise of the Asian longhorned tick, and shares guidance on disease risks and management practices.

Genetic improvement is another major theme. A genetics expert explains how producers can select cows that fit their environment and production goals. The talk reviews breeding objectives, EPD tools, and ways to refine selection decisions.

Marketing is also emphasized. A session on intentional calf management explains how health practices, physical traits, weaning decisions, and reputation can increase the value of feeder cattle in the marketplace.

The conference concludes with a cattle market outlook. With limited heifer retention in 2025, cattle numbers remain low and prices stay strong. The session provides insight into what producers may expect in 2026 and how to plan ahead for success.
