Illinois students take center stage with Agriculture Research

By Andi Anderson

The Illinois Nutrient Research and Education Council (NREC) hosted the Investment Insight Live event on February 15 in Champaign, showcasing the research efforts of 27 undergraduate and graduate students in agriculture. The event, organized by the Illinois NREC, provided students with the opportunity to present their research projects on the main stage.

Julie Hewitt, Executive Director of Illinois NREC, explained that while they have previously included a student poster session, this event introduced a new element with lightening presentation sessions. Each student had approximately three minutes to summarize their research on the main stage, offering a dynamic platform to share their findings.

The idea for incorporating student presentations came from Shani Golovay, Research Manager at Illinois NREC, who was inspired by similar sessions at other conferences. The addition of live presentations allows students to go beyond traditional poster sessions and present their work directly to the audience.

One of the presenters, Luke Bergschneider, a graduate research assistant from the University of Illinois, appreciated the opportunity to share his research on subfield nutrient balance and nutrient use efficiency. Bergschneider works with farmers to collect farm nutrient balances and assess nutrient use efficiencies, primarily focusing on nitrogen.

The student presentations covered a range of topics, including water and sediment control basins, soil nutrient retainment, and the benefits of cover crops. To participate in the event next year, students are required to submit an abstract presenting their research, emphasizing that the projects discussed are funded by NREC, with the funds originating from Illinois agriculture.
