Illinois Pork Producers Association (IPPA) has made significant contributions to fight hunger in the state. Since 2008, they have donated over 1 million pounds of pork through the "Pork Power: Partnering to Fight Hunger in Illinois" campaign.
This year, a donation of 5,352 pounds of ground pork was made to the Central Illinois Foodbank, processed by Steidinger Foods.
The donation supports IPPA’s annual goal of providing 100,000 pounds of pork to families in need across Illinois. Pam Molitoris, Executive Director of Central Illinois Foodbank, emphasized the importance of these donations, noting that protein is a highly requested item among families facing food insecurity.
Cassie Dumoulin, a hog farmer and Director at Illinois Corn Growers Association, highlighted the collaboration among farmers and commodity groups like the Illinois Corn Growers Association and Illinois Soybean Association in supporting this initiative. She noted how partnerships amplify the impact of these efforts, allowing farmers to contribute to the community meaningfully.
Towards the end of each year, IPPA converts remaining funds into ground pork, which is then distributed to regional food banks. These donations ensure that families have access to nutritious protein sources during the holidays and beyond.
Illinois pork producers emphasize their commitment to giving back throughout the year, recognizing that hunger is not seasonal. Through consistent efforts and strong community partnerships, they continue to make a difference in addressing food insecurity.
This initiative showcases how the agricultural community unites to support those in need, ensuring that families across Illinois have food on their tables. It reflects the dedication of Illinois farmers to fostering a healthier and more secure future for everyone.
