The Illinois Pork Producers Association (IPPA) has made a significant contribution towards fighting hunger in the state by donating 50,000 pounds of ground pork to nine regional food banks in 2023. This initiative is part of the "Pork Power: Partnering to Fight Hunger in Illinois" campaign, demonstrating the agricultural community's commitment to supporting those in need.
Chad Leman, the president of IPPA, emphasized the deep connection Illinois farmers have with their local communities and their desire to assist neighbors in need. The Pork Power program, administered by the IPPA, plays a pivotal role in facilitating these donations. Illinois pig farmers have been at the forefront of this effort, showcasing their generosity and responsiveness to community needs.
The collaboration extends beyond the IPPA. The Illinois Corn Growers Association and the Illinois Soybean Association have also played integral roles. Shane Gray, an IL Corn Director and farmer, expressed pride in the partnership, highlighting the importance of these protein donations for the food banks. Similarly, Brian Atteberry of the Illinois Soybean Association (ISA) acknowledged the value of this collaboration, which benefits the organizations, farmers, and the community.
A significant portion of the donation, over 4,800 pounds of pork, was made to the Central Illinois Foodbank in Springfield. Brooke Dunn, the Public Relations Manager at the food bank, expressed gratitude for the donation, noting the high cost of protein and its unaffordability for many families.
This end-of-year giving is a hallmark of the IPPA's efforts, where remaining funds are turned into ground pork and distributed among state food banks. The Central Illinois Foodbank, serving over 140 partner agencies across 21 counties, is a major beneficiary of this program.
The "Pork Power" initiative exemplifies the impact of collective efforts in addressing hunger and supporting local communities. It also highlights the agricultural sector's dedication to not just farming, but also to fulfilling social responsibilities and strengthening food security in Illinois.
