Illinois Invests in Clean Energy Future with Renewable Energy Credits

Illinois is paving the way for a cleaner and greener future by announcing its investment in renewable energy credits (RECs). With a commitment to combating climate change and promoting sustainable practices, the state is taking bold measures to transition towards a clean energy economy.

Through the Illinois Power Agency's Long-Term Renewable Resources Procurement Plan, the state plans to procure 6 million RECs annually from wind, solar, and other renewable sources. These RECs represent the environmental attributes of one megawatt-hour of renewable energy generation.

This forward-thinking initiative will not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also support the development of renewable energy projects across the state. By purchasing these RECs, Illinois is driving demand for clean energy and encouraging investment in renewable infrastructure.

Governor J.B. Pritzker emphasizes the importance of this investment in achieving Illinois' renewable energy goals, stating, "This significant step forward will accelerate our transition to a carbon-free power sector and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future for all Illinoisans.”

The state's commitment to renewable energy credits highlights its dedication to a resilient and sustainable energy sector. By incentivizing renewable energy production and consumption, Illinois is creating opportunities for job growth, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and setting an example for other states to follow in the pursuit of a cleaner and more sustainable future.
