Illinois farmers and agricultural professionals are being encouraged to participate in a new survey focused on the use of weather forecasts in agricultural operations. The study aims to better understand how weather information supports farming decisions and how future weather-related resources can be improved.
The survey is being conducted by researchers from the University of Illinois. Their goal is to learn how individuals involved in agriculture rely on weather forecasts during daily operations. The information collected will help researchers identify ways to make weather tools, communication systems, and forecasting resources more useful for the agricultural community.
Weather conditions play a major role in farming activities throughout the year. Farmers often depend on accurate forecasts when planning planting, irrigation, harvesting, crop protection, and other important tasks. By gathering feedback from agricultural stakeholders, researchers hope to gain a clearer understanding of the challenges and opportunities related to weather information use.
The survey is open to Illinois residents who are 18 years of age or older and are involved in agriculture. Eligible participants include producers, crop advisers, agricultural retailers, and others whose work is regularly influenced by weather conditions. Individuals who frequently use weather information to make farming or business decisions are encouraged to take part.
Researchers have stated that participation is completely voluntary, and all responses will remain anonymous. The collected information will be used only for research purposes and to support improvements in agricultural weather services and resources.
The study is expected to provide valuable insights into how weather forecasts are currently used across different areas of agriculture. These findings may help guide the development of future forecasting tools and communication methods designed to better meet the needs of agricultural professionals.
The survey will remain open until September 5, 2026, giving participants ample time to share their experiences and perspectives. Those interested can complete the survey online through the University of Illinois survey platform.
Questions regarding the survey may be directed to Naomi Dolan, Graduate Researcher at the University of Illinois, through email. Agricultural professionals are encouraged to participate and contribute to research that may improve weather forecasting resources and support more informed farm management decisions in the future.
