The latest Illinois Crop Progress and Condition Report from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reveals that the state’s corn planting is currently behind the 5-year average, while soybean planting is slightly ahead.
During the week ending May 19, 2024, there were 3.5 days suitable for fieldwork. The statewide average temperature was 67.4 degrees, which is 4.0 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 0.92 inches, slightly below the normal of 1.01 inches.
Moisture Supply:
- Topsoil Moisture: 3% short, 71% adequate, 26% surplus.
- Subsoil Moisture: 3% short, 78% adequate, 19% surplus.
Corn Progress:
- Planted: 67% (5-year average: 71%)
- Emerged: 49% (5-year average: 44%)
Soybean Progress:
- Planted: 58% (5-year average: 56%)
- Emerged: 31% (5-year average: 29%)
Winter Wheat:
- Headed: 90% (5-year average: 74%)
- Condition: 5% very poor, 7% poor, 18% fair, 49% good, 21% excellent.
