Hartman steers corn growers to new heights

By Andi Anderson

Kenneth Hartman Jr, a fifth-generation corn farmer from Waterloo, Illinois, has started his term as president of the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA).

His leadership comes at a crucial time when corn farmers face rising input costs and falling commodity prices. Hartman is determined to address these challenges through policy initiatives, expanding market access, and building strong relationships.

Hartman’s theme for his presidency is “Building Bridges.” He emphasizes the importance of creating and strengthening alliances with organizations both inside and outside the agricultural sector.

Hartman believes coalition-building is essential to advancing key agricultural policies, such as passing a strong farm bill, expanding ethanol usage, and addressing tariffs on agricultural supplies.

One of Hartman’s main priorities is promoting the use of higher ethanol blends in fuel, which he sees as beneficial for both farmers and consumers.

He also aims to work closely with U.S. officials to increase access to foreign markets for American corn and explore new uses for corn.

Hartman has served on the NCGA board for six years and has held leadership roles in various agricultural organizations, including the Illinois Corn Growers Association.

In 2021, he was recognized for his farming skills and community service with the Master Farmer award from Prairie Farmer magazine.

As NCGA president, Hartman will focus on advancing legislation and building coalitions to benefit corn growers across the U.S., with an emphasis on promoting ethanol, increasing market opportunities, and ensuring that farmers are supported by effective policies.

Harold Wolle, Hartman’s predecessor, will now serve as chairman of the NCGA board.
