Free Forestry Stewardship Series Starts This July Online

Free Forestry Stewardship Series Starts This July Online

By Andi Anderson

This July, the University of Illinois Extension invites forest lovers, land managers, and professionals to explore tree care and forest stewardship through its free online Forestry Stewardship Series. The four-part webinar series runs every Wednesday from 2 to 3 p.m. CT, starting July 9.

The first session, “Urban Trees are a Matter of Life and Death,” highlights how trees improve public health. Studies link more trees with healthier pregnancies and lower heart-related deaths, especially in areas with higher tree cover.

On July 16, “Legacy Trees” focuses on some of Illinois’ oldest trees and their cultural and ecological importance. Participants will learn how to care for these forest elders and the programs that support them.

The July 23 session, “Staying Inside the Lines,” covers the basics of firebreak design—key for managing safe prescribed burns. The webinar will explain proper placement, tools, and techniques for effective fire prevention.

Finally, “Emerging Invasive Species Across Illinois” on July 30 provides updates on new plant and insect threats to Illinois forests. The session includes identification tips and management practices to slow their spread.

These webinars are open to everyone—landowners, professionals, and the public. Continuing education credits may be available through the International Society of Arboriculture.

To register, visit go.illinois.edu/ForestryStewardship. Early registration is encouraged for accommodation requests. For more info, contact Christopher Evans at (618) 695-3383 or cwevans@illinois.edu.

This initiative is part of the University’s commitment to forest research, education, and stewardship. Learn more at extension.illinois.edu/Forestry.
