Farm success starts with Illinois legal webinars

By Andi Anderson

Farmers across Illinois can now enhance the resilience of their operations by participating in a free legal webinar series offered by the University of Illinois Extension in collaboration with Farm Commons.

Designed for both new and experienced farmers, these webinars aim to equip participants with essential legal knowledge and tools to confidently manage their farms.

By being proactive about legal issues, farmers can reduce risks, improve profitability, and build sustainable farming practices.

The Business Structure Basics webinar, scheduled for October 22, 2024, will teach participants how to make informed decisions about their business structures.

Whether just starting or decades into farming, this session will focus on tax advantages and governance practices to prevent potential legal issues.

On December 16, 2024, the Forming an LLC webinar will walk participants through the process of creating a Limited Liability Company (LLC). This session will focus on why LLCs are beneficial as a risk management tool and cover best practices for maintaining this business structure to ensure its benefits.

In March 2025, the Land Leasing Basics session will address the complexities of farmland leasing. Participants will learn what a strong lease should include and how to put these agreements in writing to protect their interests.

The series will conclude on June 23, 2025, with a webinar on Farm Property Insurance. Farmers will learn the basics of insuring buildings, equipment, and supplies to prevent financial loss due to accidents or natural disasters.

Each session begins at 7 p.m. and runs for one hour. Farmers of all levels are encouraged to register and gain legal knowledge to help secure the future of their operations.
