Farm Safety Tips for Planting Season

Farm Safety Tips for Planting Season

By Andi Anderson

Planting season is here in Illinois, and with it comes the increased presence of farm equipment on rural roads. To ensure everyone gets home safely, both farmers and drivers need to be extra cautious.

Motorists:

  • Slow down and be aware: Pay attention to your surroundings and avoid distractions.
  • Give farm equipment plenty of space: Remember they can't move over like a car and need extra room for wide turns.
  • Pass safely: Don't attempt to pass until it's clear and legal to do so. Maintain at least a 3-second following distance.

Farmers:

  • Use proper lighting and signals: Ensure all lights and turn signals are functioning before heading out.
  • Clean safety equipment: Maintain clear visibility by cleaning mirrors and windows.
  • Be aware of traffic: Look both ways before entering roadways and pull over if a traffic backup forms behind you.

Everyone:

  • Minimize distractions: Put down the phone and focus on the road.
  • Share the road responsibly: Courtesy and patience are key to preventing accidents.

By following these safety tips, we can all contribute to a safe planting season in Illinois.
