Farm Families Honored at Community Agriculture Celebration

By Andi Anderson

A special celebration of agriculture took place during the HSHS St. Francis Hospital Foundation Farm Family event, where two notable awards were presented to honor individuals and businesses that have made strong contributions to the farming community.

This event, held for families in Macoupin and Montgomery counties, focused on health, education, and recognizing service within agriculture.

The St. Isidore Friend of Agriculture award was presented to Tom Burenga for his lifelong dedication to the farming industry. Originally from New Jersey, his interest in agriculture began at the age of 10 through 4‑H programs.

His passion grew further during his time in FFA, where he gained hands‑on experience raising broilers, farming land, and growing tomatoes under contract. After completing a degree in Agricultural Engineering from Michigan State University in 1966, Burenga built a successful career marked by creativity and commitment. He earned 18 patents, beginning with the development of a pea combine at FMC Corporation.

In 1980, Burenga moved to Litchfield to lead the Wikomi Company, later known as Worksaver. Under his leadership as CEO and owner, the company expanded to produce more than 400 implements for agricultural and industrial needs.

Worksaver became a trusted supplier for major brands and provided employment for more than 70 workers. Burenga has always believed in the strength of agriculture and the value of honesty in business.

He also supported local schools and training centers to encourage skilled trades. Alongside his wife Paulette, he has built a legacy of dedication, hard work, and community support.

The Special Recognition award was presented to Victory Lane Ford and its owners, Gene and Stephanie Hebenstreit. Their family business, started in 1998, has grown to two locations offering Ford and Chrysler‑brand vehicles.

Their children, Chelsey and Alec, are key partners in the operation. Beyond their business achievements, the Hebenstreits have shown strong support for HSHS St. Francis Hospital through charitable initiatives.

Their Victory Lane Challenge fundraising effort has helped raise more than $120,000 for the St. Clare Center food pantry. They also sponsor box lunches delivered to farmers twice each year.

Stephanie has long supported the hospital Auxiliary, while Gene serves on the Foundation Leadership Council. Their philosophy of always doing the right thing guides their efforts to uplift the community.

The Farm Family event highlighted the importance of agriculture and honored those who continue to strengthen farming communities through innovation, generosity, and leadership.
