Empowering Tribal Nations - USDA’s key actions revealed

By Jamie Martin

At the recent White House Tribal Nations Summit, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack outlined several significant initiatives aimed at empowering Tribal Nations.

These actions, part of the Administration’s commitment to Tribal self-determination and food sovereignty, include a substantial $45 million in new investments.

Secretary Vilsack highlighted the $20 million allocated by the U.S. Forest Service to enhance forest management and access to climate markets for Tribes. This initiative supports the sustainability and resilience of Tribal lands.

An additional $25 million through the National Intertribal Food Business Center focuses on boosting the agricultural capabilities of Indian Country, aiding small and mid-sized food and farm businesses.

“The Biden-Harris Administration has listened to Tribal Nations, and USDA is proud to answer with actions that empower Tribal Nation self-determination and food sovereignty,” Secretary Vilsack stated, emphasizing the administration's dedication to honoring their trust responsibilities.

The funding aims to foster a stronger, more resilient food system in Indian Country and comes as part of the Inflation Reduction Act’s benefits.

These efforts are complemented by various USDA programs designed to assist in developing scientific inquiry at Tribal land-grant colleges and improving watershed conservation access for Tribes.

These developments not only support the economic and environmental initiatives of Tribal Nations but also ensure a step forward in maintaining their cultural and environmental heritage.
