Duckworth Backs Illinois Farmers Amid Rising Agriculture Costs

By Andi Anderson

U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) recently met with leaders of the Illinois Corn Growers during the Illinois Corn August Board Meeting to discuss the growing challenges facing farmers and the agriculture industry. Rising costs for fuel, fertilizer, and other important farm supplies were among the major concerns highlighted during the discussion.

The meeting focused on shared priorities aimed at supporting family farmers and strengthening the agricultural sector. Key topics included expanding biofuel markets, increasing agricultural exports, and improving farm safety net programs. Leaders emphasized the need for policies that can help farmers remain competitive while managing higher production expenses.

During the meeting, Duckworth stressed the importance of farmers to both the state and the nation. She said:

“America has always depended on our nation’s farmers to grow the food and fuel we need, and I’m proud to advocate for them on both the national and international stage. Donald Trump promised no new wars and lower costs. And yet, the cost of everything from diesel to fertilizer to key agricultural inputs continues to skyrocket while he’s focused on building a ballroom for his billionaire buddies. Illinois’s farmers are essential to the strength of our state and our nation, and I will always fight to ensure they have the support they need to succeed.”

Duckworth has supported several initiatives designed to expand the use of biofuels across the United States. She helped introduce bipartisan legislation that would allow the year-round sale of higher ethanol blends and increase access to E15 fuel. She also backed measures aimed at expanding domestic biofuel production and reducing dependence on foreign energy sources.

In addition to biofuels, Duckworth has worked to strengthen agricultural trade opportunities. As a member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, she has promoted Illinois agriculture in international markets. Her efforts contributed to increased opportunities for U.S. biofuel exports to Japan and helped secure major commitments from Taiwan to purchase Illinois corn and soybeans.

The discussion highlighted the importance of continued support for farmers through market expansion, export growth, and effective farm programs. Industry leaders and policymakers agreed that these efforts can help ensure a stronger future for agriculture while supporting farm families across Illinois and the United States.
