The Du Quoin State Fair, an Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) initiative, has once again showcased its resilience as a potent economic engine for Southern Illinois. Despite facing excessive heat and humidity conditions, the fair attracted over 166,000 attendees, emphasizing the enduring importance of agriculture and entertainment in the region. This year, it raked in more than $417,000 in revenue from ticketed events, breaking records, and exceeding expectations.
Strong ticket sales were propelled by remarkable performances at the Grandstand, featuring artists like Dustin Lynch, Larry the Cable Guy, and FLO Rida. Governor JB Pritzker praised the fair's consistent growth, affirming their commitment to its success, reinforcing its position as a premier tourist destination, and recognizing its pivotal role in supporting the Southern Illinois economy.
Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton acknowledged the fair's near-record attendance, emphasizing that the Du Quoin State Fair embodies the essence of Southern Illinois, where agriculture unites communities, regardless of weather conditions.
The Du Quoin State Fair, rooted in tradition, accentuates Illinois' foremost industry while delivering top-notch entertainment and educational experiences. Reports indicate that the fair boasts an economic impact of $6 million, with $2 million allocated to wages and salaries, and over half a million dollars generated in sales tax revenue.
IDOA Director Jerry Costello expressed pride in the fair's staff and its ability to sustain success, noting the fair's significance as a year-round economic engine that employs hundreds and bolsters local businesses in the region.
Looking ahead, the Du Quoin State Fair prepares for the remarkable total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. The fairgrounds offer prime viewing locations, similar to the 2017 eclipse, with the potential to attract millions of tourists to Southern Illinois. This influx promises to boost the local economy by spurring hotel bookings, retail sales, and restaurant patronage. The fair is gearing up with a reservation system for over 1,000 available campsites on the fairgrounds campus during this celestial event.
