The University of Illinois has announced Professor Dan Shike as the new interim head of the Department of Animal Sciences, effective June 16. He steps into this role as Rodney Johnson transitions to become the associate dean for research at the college.
"I am excited Dan will be at the helm of animal sciences," said Rodney Johnson, expressing confidence in Shike's capabilities. Shike's deep familiarity with the department and his natural leadership skills are expected to drive significant advancements in the field.
Since joining the faculty in 2011, Shike has established a robust research program focused on beef cattle management and nutrition. His work has not only attracted over $11 million in research funding but has also led to numerous peer-reviewed publications and presentations worldwide.
Shike's dedication to academia is reflected in his role as a mentor to many graduate and undergraduate students, earning him several prestigious awards for his contributions to education and research.
As the department navigates this period of transition, Dean Germán Bollero expressed his enthusiasm for Shike's leadership. "Shike brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to our mission, and we are confident in his ability to lead us during this transitional period," Bollero said.
The university continues its search for a permanent department head, aiming to build on the strong foundation Shike and his predecessors have established.
