China Plans Counter Tariffs on U.S. Agriculture Imports

By Andi Anderson

China is preparing to impose countermeasures on U.S. agricultural and food products in response to new U.S. tariffs. The Global Times reported that China’s government is formulating strategies to retaliate against an additional 10% duty on Chinese imports imposed by the US government.

China is a key market for U.S. agricultural exports. Despite a decline in trade since 2018, new tariffs on major agricultural products like soybeans, meat, and grains could have significant consequences for US farmers.

In 2024, China imported $29.25 billion worth of U.S. agricultural goods, marking a 14% drop from the previous year. Experts suggest that additional tariffs could further impact trade between the two countries.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Commerce Secretary confirmed that tariffs on Canada and Mexico will take effect soon. However, the exact percentage remains uncertain as discussions continue within the U.S. administration. Trade tensions are rising, and the situation remains fluid.

Mexico is also considering aligning its trade policies with the U.S. by imposing similar tariffs on Chinese goods. The Mexican government has already placed restrictions on low-cost imports and counterfeit products.

Economic experts believe that aligning trade policies with the U.S. and Canada could strengthen North American markets.

These developments come ahead of a crucial economic meeting in China, where officials are expected to announce their 2025 economic priorities.

With increasing trade tensions, the global agricultural sector could experience significant disruptions in the coming months.

For farmers and agricultural exporters, these trade decisions may influence market prices and trade volumes. The outcome of ongoing negotiations will play a vital role in shaping future agricultural trade policies between China, the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
