The Northbrook Farmers Market continues its tradition of supporting the community through its matching grant program for recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
This initiative aims to make fresh, locally sourced food more accessible to those on limited budgets, allowing them to enjoy the nutritional benefits of farm-fresh produce.
Dale Duda, the Manager of Northbrook Farmers Market, emphasizes the market's mission: “Helping provide farm fresh food to those who might not otherwise be able to afford it is one of the core missions of the market."
He adds, "It has been our conviction since early on that those with fewer resources be able to enjoy the pleasure and benefits of shopping at our market just like the rest of us."
Since its inception, the market has distributed over $75,000 in matching funds. The process is simple: when a SNAP client uses their benefits at the market, Northbrook matches the amount, effectively doubling the money they can spend on groceries.
The beneficiaries of this program primarily include elderly immigrants, working parents, and disabled individuals, who find this support crucial in managing their dietary needs.
The funding for this beneficial program is sourced from grants and donations provided by corporations supportive of the market's goals.

Northbrook Farmers Market operates every Wednesday from early morning until afternoon in downtown Northbrook and is easily accessible, including for those with disabilities.
Beyond just a marketplace, it serves as a hub for education and community engagement. “Our goal is to educate residents on the benefits of buying locally, eating healthy, and living green, as well as supporting local farming families and entrepreneurs,” explains Dale Duda.
The market not only provides a platform for local farmers and food artisans within a 150-mile radius but also engages in community service and environmental stewardship.
Activities include food drives, educational programs for young people about nutrition and sustainable living, and special events to raise awareness and funds for local charities.
