USDA empowers rural areas with grants

By Andi Anderson

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development announced $40 million in funding for its Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) Grant Program, aimed at improving remote education and healthcare in rural and Tribal communities. Applications for 2025 funding are open until March 6.

2024 Funded Projects in Illinois

Lincoln Land Community College in Sangamon County received $448,000 to equip nine sites with advanced distance learning technology.

This will provide physical science classes at outreach centers and Spanish and biology courses at four high schools, expanding dual credit offerings.

Danville Area Community College in Vermilion County received $468,000 to establish dedicated classrooms, mobile classrooms, and huddle rooms. These facilities will deliver dual credit classes, mental health education, substance abuse counseling, and professional development, benefiting 1,537 students and rural residents.

Program Benefits

The DLT program provides audio and video equipment to connect rural communities to education, training, and healthcare resources.

These grants enable:

  • Students to access classes otherwise unavailable due to distance.
  • Teachers to deliver expertise and training across the country.
  • Patients to receive specialized care without leaving their homes.

Eligible applicants include government entities, Tribes, nonprofits, and businesses. The USDA prioritizes projects that promote economic recovery, equitable access, and climate resilience.

Application Details

Applications must be submitted electronically via grants.gov by March 6, 2025. Additional details are available in the Jan. 6 Federal Register, page 589.

USDA Rural Development Illinois State Director Pam Monetti highlighted the importance of the program: “The DLT program ensures rural communities have access to high-quality education and essential healthcare services, improving overall well-being.”

This initiative strengthens rural infrastructure, enhancing education and healthcare accessibility to support sustainable community growth.
