McHenry County 4-H Beef Weigh in Set for January 2026

McHenry County 4-H Beef Weigh in Set for January 2026

By Andi Anderson

McHenry County 4-H members involved in beef projects are invited to take part in the 2026 Beef Weigh-In, an important event that supports proper livestock identification and fair preparation.

The weigh-in is scheduled for January 31, 2026, and will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Beef Barn located on the McHenry County Fairgrounds in Woodstock, Illinois. Participation is free of charge, making it accessible for all enrolled youth.

This event helps ensure that beef animals are properly recorded before the county fair season. In case of severe winter weather, a snow date has been scheduled for February 14, 2026, during the same morning hours. Families are encouraged to watch for updates and plan accordingly.

A major update for 2026 involves new federal livestock identification requirements. Under updated USDA rules, all cattle and swine shown at county fairs must have RFID 840 identification tags.

If an animal already has an approved electronic identification tag, that tag will remain in place and will not be replaced. These rules are designed to improve animal traceability and protect livestock health nationwide.

Registration is required for all members enrolled in a beef project, even if they do not plan to attend the weigh-in. Only one registration is needed per family. During registration, families must indicate whether they will attend, the maximum number of animals they may bring or none, the number of RFID tags needed, and their preferred time slot.

Providing a cell phone number is required so organizers can contact families in case of cancellation or schedule changes.

Participants are also encouraged to join the Remind App for McHenry County 4-H beef exhibitors. This tool helps share timely updates and important reminders. Information on joining will be sent after registration confirmation.

If reasonable accommodations are needed to participate, families should contact the program organizer in advance. Overall, the 2026 Beef Weigh-In supports youth learning, responsible livestock management, and smooth preparation for the upcoming fair season.
