The Specialty Soya and Grains Alliance (SSGA) continues to strengthen its presence in the U.S. specialty soybean sector through its growing partnership with the Illinois Soybean Association (ISA).
Known for promoting identity-preserved (IP) soybeans, SSGA plays a vital role in connecting farmers, exporters, and global buyers of high-quality food-grade soybeans used for tofu, miso, natto, and soymilk.
Farmers who grow IP soybeans commit to keeping their crops separate from others to avoid mixing, while processors pay them a premium for their efforts.
This arrangement helps maintain superior quality standards, which are especially valued in overseas markets.
Illinois farmer Bryan Severs, chairman of ISA, was recently elected chairman of SSGA, further solidifying the close relationship between both organizations.
Severs emphasized that farmers provide global buyers with confidence in U.S. specialty soybeans by showcasing sustainable practices and consistent quality.
One of SSGA’s most important initiatives is the High Quality Specialty Grains (HQSG) program. Developed in cooperation with USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), the program was created in response to Japan’s strict import requirements.
It streamlines the certification process, reduces costs, and allows exporters to move containers more quickly. So far, more than 5,000 applications for certificates have been processed without a single complaint from foreign buyers.
The program benefits the entire value chain by ensuring efficiency for exporters while offering growers premium opportunities. Farmers interested in growing specialty soybeans are encouraged to connect with processors through SSGA’s membership network, with most contracts signed in the fall months.
Looking ahead, SSGA is working to expand the HQSG program to other specialty grains and explore markets in the Philippines, Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam, and India. Backed by state soybean checkoff programs, SSGA also promotes its U.S. Identity Preserved label, assuring buyers of the reliability and quality of American-grown specialty soybeans.
Through strong partnerships and innovative programs, SSGA is ensuring that U.S. specialty soybean farmers remain competitive in growing international markets.
