SIU student forum to explore time management challenges in 2024

By Andi Anderson

Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU) will host its annual Student Speakers Forum on November 14, focusing on managing time in an increasingly fast-paced society.

Five undergraduate students will present their perspectives on time management at this free, public forum, held from 7 to 8 p.m. in the John C. Guyon Auditorium in Morris Library. Titled "24/7 in 2024: Navigating Time in a Fast-Paced World," the event will also be available for live streaming on the School of Communication Studies’ YouTube channel and Facebook page.

Franklin Kimmell, a doctoral student and graduate teaching assistant organizing the forum, expressed the significance of this semester’s theme. "The theme encourages students to reflect on time in our modern, always-connected society," Kimmell explained.

Christina Ivey, assistant professor and introductory course coordinator, noted the diversity of the students' views, promising a discussion that will resonate with everyone.

The five student speakers will approach time management from multiple perspectives, such as dealing with constant connectivity, work-life balance, and the influence of technology on our perception of time.

The forum will also cover themes like mindfulness, intentional living, and evolving societal expectations about time. Kimmell added that students may discuss how effectively managing time can support personal growth, community involvement, and even innovative solutions beneficial to society.

Each speaker will deliver a 6- to 8-minute persuasive speech on their chosen topic, earning a $100 scholarship from the Society for Civil Discourse, which sponsors the forum alongside the School of Communication Studies.

Established in 1999 by SIU alumna Barbara Jane Schwartz, the Society for Civil Discourse encourages students to freely express their opinions on significant issues affecting the Carbondale campus and society at large.

The student speakers and their topics include Libby Brandon, discussing the pressure of constant connectivity; Angelina Fremault, speaking on the concept of mortality and time; Makayla Dawn Learned, exploring time in American agriculture; Emily Yarbro, focusing on accepting the passage of time; and Elwood Sheflin, examining “Time served.”

The forum will conclude with a catered reception in the rotunda outside the auditorium, offering attendees an opportunity to discuss the topics further and connect with the speakers.

This event not only highlights students' perspectives on time management but also provides an interactive platform for exchanging ideas on relevant social issues.
