Sixteen rural farms and businesses in Illinois have been awarded grants through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). This initiative supports agricultural producers and rural small businesses in their efforts to adopt renewable energy technologies and improve energy efficiency.
By utilizing wind, solar, geothermal, and small hydropower energy, these businesses can lower their energy costs, increase sustainability, and contribute to addressing climate change.
Pam Monetti, the USDA Illinois State Director, emphasized the importance of supporting rural communities in transitioning to renewable energy.
"Investing in sustainable energy empowers our farmers and rural businesses by reducing energy costs and making clean energy more affordable," said Monetti.
The grants awarded under REAP allow recipients to install solar arrays, energy-efficient equipment, and other renewable technologies. For example, Douglas Bluhm’s grain farm in St. Joseph, Illinois, received $18,000 to install a 14kW solar array.
This system will save over $1,300 in energy costs annually. In Atlanta, Illinois, Joel Farms Inc. was awarded $114,000 to purchase an energy-efficient grain dryer, which is expected to save more than $40,000 per year in energy costs.
These investments not only reduce costs but also contribute to larger sustainability goals. As more rural communities embrace clean energy, the benefits will extend to both the local economy and the environment.
The USDA continues to accept applications for the REAP program and has reserved funds for less commonly used renewable energy technologies, including wind and geothermal power. The long-term impact of these projects will help rural businesses thrive while supporting broader efforts to combat climate change.
