Illinois Soybean Association Hails Biodiesel Bill Implementation

Illinois Soybean Association Hails Biodiesel Bill Implementation

By Andi Anderson

The Illinois Soybean Association (ISA) is lauding the implementation of a bipartisan bill aimed at fostering the adoption of higher blends of biodiesel, set to take effect on April 1. This landmark legislation is being hailed as a game-changer by ISA Chairman Ron Kindred and other proponents, who see it as a significant boon for both soybean farmers and the broader Illinois community.

Ron Kindred, a soybean farmer from Atlanta, Illinois, expressed his enthusiasm for the new law, emphasizing its potential to drive economic growth while advancing environmental sustainability. "This momentous achievement elevates Illinois to the pinnacle of renewable fuels leadership," Kindred remarked. "It represents a giant leap toward a more sustainable future that begins on Illinois farms."

The bill is expected to create a substantial surge in demand for soybean oil, translating to approximately 65-70 million bushels of soybeans annually once the B20 blend is fully implemented. This boost in demand is poised to invigorate the renewable fuels sector and reinforce Illinois's position as a trailblazer in the field.

Primary sponsors of the B20 Bill, Rep. Eva Dina Delgado and Sen. Patrick Joyce, received accolades for their unwavering commitment to advancing the legislation. Rep. Delgado underscored the environmental benefits of transitioning to B20, highlighting its potential to reduce emissions and improve air quality. Similarly, Rep. Meier emphasized the positive impact of the bill on Illinois farmers and the local economy.

Sen. Joyce elaborated on the sales tax exemption embedded in the legislation, which incentivizes the use of biodiesel blends by reducing their cost. This exemption is poised to attract businesses to Illinois, bolstering the state's economy and benefiting residents, particularly in industrial corridors.

Allied organizations, including the American Lung Association, have voiced support for the bill's passage, citing its potential to enhance air quality and public health statewide. Bailey Arnold, Director of Clean Air Initiatives at the American Lung Association, commended the shift to higher biodiesel blends as a significant step toward reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality.

The B20 bill represents a substantial leap forward in promoting biodiesel use in Illinois, with escalating blend levels set to further bolster its environmental benefits. By prioritizing renewable energy sources and reducing reliance on traditional diesel, Illinois is paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future.
