Illinois emerges as a promising contender in the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) industry, propelled by its robust infrastructure, abundant feedstocks, and supportive research facilities. With a $1.50-per-gallon tax credit for SAF purchasers and users, the Prairie State positions itself as a frontrunner in fostering the growth of this eco-friendly fuel.
During the "Leading the Way: Sustainable Aviation Fuel in Illinois" conference in Lisle, ExxonMobil Senior Vice President Jack Williams underscored the state's commitment to integrating SAF into the market. Organized by the Illinois Manufacturers Association, IL Corn, and Intersect Illinois, the conference showcased SAF's potential to revolutionize manufacturing, transportation, and agriculture sectors across the Midwest.
Governor JB Pritzker, a proponent of SAF, highlighted Illinois' advantageous position in this burgeoning industry. The state boasts a skilled biofuels workforce and ranks as the third-largest ethanol producer in the nation. Pritzker emphasized Illinois' efforts to incentivize investment in SAF production, infrastructure, and technology, fostering innovation and industry growth.
With nine international airports and a supportive regulatory environment, Illinois offers a conducive ecosystem for SAF development. Pritzker emphasized leveraging industry leadership and agricultural resources to accelerate SAF technology adoption and stimulate a thriving sustainable aviation fuel industry.
Although the Illinois SAF tax credit, effective since July 2023, aims to incentivize participation, no companies have applied for it yet, according to Illinois Department of Revenue Director David Harris. However, U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth, an advocate for biofuels, emphasized the pivotal role of SAF in meeting carbon reduction goals, stressing the importance of Illinois' contribution to the market.
Illinois is poised to lead the way in sustainable aviation fuel production, capitalizing on its strengths and fostering collaboration between industry stakeholders to drive innovation and sustainability in the aviation sector.
