In 2023, Illinois maintained its position as the leading state in soybean production, contributing nearly 649 million bushels. Despite a 4% decrease from the previous year, Illinois outperformed other states, with Iowa ranking second in soybean production. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that soybean exports from the U.S., primarily destined for China, Mexico, and Egypt, amounted to a total export value exceeding $34 billion.
John Lumpe, the CEO of the Illinois Soybean Association, emphasized the resilience of Illinois farmers and their ability to consistently cultivate a significant soybean crop. He mentioned ongoing efforts to explore new markets and opportunities, not only for whole soybeans but also for soybean oil and soybean meal.
While Illinois fell to second place in terms of corn production, producing 2.28 billion bushels, Iowa claimed the top spot with 2.5 billion bushels. The overall U.S. corn production in 2023 increased by 12.4% over the previous year, reaching 15.3 billion bushels.
Regarding planted acreage for all principal crops, Kansas led the nation, followed by Iowa, North Dakota, Illinois, and Texas. The data highlights the agricultural significance of these states in contributing to the nation's crop production.
