Illinois has introduced the Illinois Eats Program to enhance local communities and combat food insecurity. Governor J.B. Pritzker recently declared the allocation of $28.8 million in federal grant funding to procure food directly from farmers and distribute it to food banks, farming collaboratives, and nonprofits statewide.
This initiative will benefit four food pantries in Northern Illinois, including the Northern Illinois Food Bank, Jo Daviess Local Foods LLC, Angelic Organics Learning Center, Inc., and the DeKalb County Community Gardens.
Governor J.B. Pritzker emphasized the fundamental role of food access in building healthy and prosperous communities, expressing gratitude to the United States Department of Agriculture for its cooperation and support. He stated, "Thanks to the Illinois Eats Program, nearly $29 million in grant funding is being distributed to fifteen food organizations serving families across our state. Illinois Eats is bridging the gap in Illinois' food supply chain, supporting both farmers and our most food-insecure residents."
The state's focus is on exclusively purchasing products from historically underserved farmers and ranchers, ensuring a more inclusive and equitable distribution of resources.
Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton highlighted the program's dual impact on addressing food insecurity and recognizing the contributions of agriculture professionals. She stated, "Communities cannot thrive when our neighbors are hungry. The economy cannot thrive when our farmers feel undervalued. The Illinois Eats Program allows us to both address food insecurity and uplift the hard work of our agriculture professionals."
The Illinois Eats Program reflects the state's commitment to creating a more resilient and interconnected community, with local farmers playing a vital role in supporting those in need. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of fostering collaboration and strengthening the ties that bind communities across Illinois.
