Illinois crop progress highlights weather and wheat condition

By Andi Anderson

Illinois experienced unique weather conditions in early November, shaping the progress of its crops and fieldwork. During the week ending November 10, 2024, farmers saw an average temperature of 54.6 degrees Fahrenheit—an unusual 10.2 degrees above the typical seasonal average.

This warmer-than-normal weather came alongside a significant amount of rainfall, with precipitation levels averaging 3.04 inches across the state. This amount was 2.30 inches higher than the usual rainfall for this time, affecting field conditions and moisture levels.

Due to these conditions, there were only 3.7 days deemed suitable for fieldwork. The increased rainfall had a noticeable impact on soil moisture across Illinois.

In terms of topsoil moisture, 8 percent was rated very short, 25 percent short, 59 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus. Similarly, subsoil moisture showed 8 percent very short, 43 percent short, 46 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus ratings.

This range of moisture levels highlights the effect of the unusual weather, with some areas facing drier conditions while others received adequate or surplus moisture.

The progress of winter wheat, a vital crop for Illinois, also showed notable advances. As of the latest report, 96 percent of winter wheat had been planted, surpassing the five-year average of 93 percent.

Additionally, 83 percent of the wheat had emerged, ahead of the typical rate of 75 percent at this time of year. In terms of condition, winter wheat was rated at 1 percent very poor, 2 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 70 percent good, and 4 percent excellent, indicating overall healthy growth despite varying field conditions.

These climate and crop progress updates provide valuable insights for farmers, agricultural professionals, and students interested in learning about farming challenges in Illinois.
