Illinois crop conditions show positive progress despite rain

In the week ending July 14, 2024, Illinois experienced favorable crop conditions. There were 4.0 days suitable for fieldwork.

The statewide average temperature was 75.5 degrees, which is 0.9 degrees below normal, providing a comfortable environment for crop growth. Precipitation averaged 1.93 inches, 1.13 inches above normal, ensuring adequate moisture levels for the crops.

Topsoil moisture levels were rated as 2 percent very short, 15 percent short, 79 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture levels were rated as 3 percent very short, 22 percent short, 70 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus.

These moisture levels indicate that the crops are receiving sufficient water, which is crucial for their development.

Corn progress is ahead of the 5-year average, with 62 percent of corn silking, compared to the 5-year average of 45 percent. Additionally, 8 percent of corn has reached the dough stage, compared to the 5-year average of 3 percent.

The condition of the corn crop was reported as 2 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 57 percent good, and 16 percent excellent.

Soybeans are also showing strong progress, with 66 percent of soybeans blooming, compared to the 5-year average of 40 percent. Furthermore, 28 percent of soybeans are setting pods, compared to the 5-year average of 9 percent.

The condition of the soybean crop was rated as 2 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 64 percent good, and 9 percent excellent.

Winter wheat harvesting is nearly complete, with 96 percent harvested for grain, compared to the 5-year average of 93 percent. This indicates that Illinois farmers are on track with their harvesting schedule.

Overall, the crop progress in Illinois is encouraging, with favorable weather conditions supporting the growth and development of corn, soybeans, and winter wheat. The above-normal precipitation and moderate temperatures have created an ideal environment for these crops, ensuring a positive outlook for the agricultural sector in the state.
