Expert Sessions on Crop Nutrition Soil Health

Expert Sessions on Crop Nutrition Soil Health

By Andi Anderson

Crop nutrition plays a major role in achieving strong crop yields and healthy fields. It is also one of the most complex decisions a producer must make each season. To help farmers better understand this important topic, the Northwest Illinois Agronomy Summit will bring together experts and growers for a full day of learning and discussion.

The summit will be hosted by the University of Illinois Extension and will take place on Wednesday, January 28, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:35 p.m. The event will be held at the Highland Community College Student Conference Center in Freeport, Illinois. Farmers, agronomists, students, and agriculture professionals are encouraged to attend.

A key presentation will be led by Dr. Connor Sible, Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Crop Sciences at the University of Illinois. He will review the nutrient needs and distribution patterns of corn and soybean crops. His session will explain traditional fertilizer practices and share new research on 4R nutrient stewardship. These practices focus on using the right fertilizer source, at the right rate, at the right time, and in the right place to improve fertilizer efficiency and increase return on investment.

In addition to crop nutrition, the summit will cover several other important topics. These include soil health management, the use of foliar fertilizers in soybeans, and strategies to manage water hemp. Participants will also learn how cover crops can support weed control while improving long-term soil quality.

Registration for the summit is open to the public. The registration fee is 25 dollars and includes access to all presentations and a lunch meal. Attendees can earn up to five Certified Crop Advisor continuing education units. These credits are available in nutrient management, soil and water management, and integrated pest management.

The University of Illinois Extension organizes the summit as part of its mission to provide practical education and research-based information to communities across the state. Through events like this, Extension supports sustainable farming, improved crop performance, and stronger agricultural knowledge for current and future producers.
