Illinois is gearing up to celebrate International Compost Awareness Week with a diverse array of events aimed at promoting composting and sustainable practices. From wine tastings to alpaca farm tours, here's how you can join in on the festivities:
- Live Events: Nearly 60 live events, ranging from backyard composting demonstrations to sustainable brewery tours, will take place throughout the week. Attendees will have the opportunity to experience compost firsthand, engaging their senses in the process.
- Virtual Engagement: In addition to live events, there will be two virtual offerings a legislative lunch and learn session and a compost cafe featuring stories and performances. These virtual events provide accessible ways for people to participate from the comfort of their homes.
- Educational Outreach: Libraries across the state will display books and resources on composting, sustainability, and the environment. This outreach effort aims to educate people of all ages about the importance of composting and its positive impact on the planet.
The theme of this year's International Compost Awareness Week, "compost as nature's climate champion," underscores the vital role composting plays in mitigating climate change. By diverting food waste from landfills, composting helps reduce methane emissions—a potent greenhouse gas.
Merleanne Rampale, chair of Illinois' programming for the week, emphasizes the broader significance of composting beyond waste management. It encompasses issues such as food waste prevention, conservation, water management, and soil health—all interconnected topics vital for environmental stewardship.
Whether you're a seasoned composter or new to the concept, there's something for everyone to learn and enjoy during International Compost Awareness Week. Join the movement to embrace sustainable practices and make a positive impact on the planet.
