Krogman Family Starts Their Farming Career with Pigs
Illinois Ag Connection - 12/03/2017

Chad and Julia Krogman are recently new to the Shannon area, and new to pig farming. Along with their three young sons, the Krogman Family has constructed a new 2,450 head wean-to-finish pig barn. The IL Livestock Development Group (ILDG) and the Illinois Pork Producers Association (IPPA) coordinated an Open House to welcome them to the pork industry.

When introducing himself, Chad said, "We've been married 8 years and desire a farm lifestyle for our family where we can work together as husband and wife and build a legacy to pass on to our three sons." In 2015, the Krogman family moved to the Shannon community and were able to find a farmstead with an existing pig barn. They began custom feeding pigs in that barn, but quickly desired to build a new barn.

Chad continued, "We enjoy raising and caring for livestock and the environment. As first-generation farmers, we see raising hogs as an opportunity to work into an agricultural realm that is very capital intense. We feel blessed to have the opportunity to pursue our goals in agriculture and desire to be good stewards of what we've been given."

A ribbon cutting ceremony commenced the opening of the barn, and a pork chop lunch was provided to attendees. The open house took place before pigs arrive to ensure ample time for the barn to be deep cleaned and ready for their arrival. This barn will receive its first load of piglets in the coming week. Pigs will come in at approximately 12 pounds and live here until they reach market weight of around 280 pounds. This will take place in a 6-month period.
