The Michigan Craft Beverage Council (MCBC) has opened applications for its 2027 Research and Education Grant Program, providing valuable funding opportunities to support innovation, sustainability, and growth within the craft beverage industry. Producers, researchers, educators, and industry stakeholders are encouraged to submit proposals before the application deadline.
According to the announcement, proposals must be submitted by October 9, 2026, at 3 p.m. (ET). The grant program is designed to strengthen connections between agriculture and craft beverage production while encouraging new ideas that benefit the industry as a whole.
The MCBC offers research grants of up to $40,000 for individual projects. These grants support studies that can improve production practices, increase the use of locally grown agricultural products, and create new opportunities for growers and beverage producers.
Several priority areas have been identified for research funding. One key focus is increasing the use of agricultural products grown within the state through market research, consumer education, supply chain improvements, export opportunities, and strategies that encourage greater use of locally produced ingredients.
Another important area is the promotion of regenerative agriculture. Research projects may explore farming practices that improve sustainability, adapt production methods to local growing conditions, and identify marketing opportunities for crops grown using regenerative techniques.
The grant program also supports studies related to crop quality and product development. Topics may include evaluating new crop varieties, improving handling and production methods, analyzing flavor characteristics, and identifying opportunities for agricultural inputs used in craft beverage production. Crops such as hops, grapes, fruits, small grains, and other ingredients can be included in these efforts.
Quality assurance and quality control remain another priority. Research can focus on maintaining product quality, extending shelf life, improving packaging performance, and exploring sustainable packaging solutions that support long-term industry growth.
In addition to research grants, the MCBC provides education grants of up to $5,000. These grants are intended to support educational activities that benefit the broader craft beverage community. Eligible projects must take place within Michigan and demonstrate value to growers, craft beverage producers, and other industry stakeholders.
Educational programs must benefit groups and communities rather than a single company or individual. This approach ensures that grant funding contributes to broader industry development and knowledge sharing.
All submitted proposals will be reviewed by a joint evaluation committee. The committee is expected to assess applications during December 2026, with funding decisions anticipated in early 2027. Projects will be evaluated based on their potential impact, industry relevance, and alignment with program objectives.
