Five exceptional Illinois 4-H members were recognized during the Illinois State Fair for their outstanding career achievements, community contributions, leadership, and continued support of the Illinois 4-H program. The awards celebrate individuals whose accomplishments demonstrate the lasting value of 4-H experiences and education.
The Illinois 4-H Alumni Award, established in 1981, is the highest recognition presented to a 4-H alumnus by the Illinois 4-H Alumni Association and Illinois 4-H program on behalf of the University of Illinois. The award honors alumni who have achieved excellence in their careers while making significant contributions to their communities and professions.
Among the 2026 Illinois 4-H Alumni Award recipients is Lee Denzer, a lifelong educator, mentor, and proud Illinois 4-H alumnus. His involvement in livestock projects and judging contests inspired a successful career in agricultural education. After earning degrees in animal science from the University of Illinois, he spent more than three decades teaching at Black Hawk College East Campus. Throughout his career, he mentored students and coached nationally recognized judging teams, helping shape future agricultural leaders.
Another recipient, Dr. Raymond Dieter, a pioneering surgeon, dedicated community leader, and proud 4-H alumnus, built a distinguished career in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. His 4-H experiences helped develop leadership skills and a commitment to service. During a medical career spanning more than 40 years, he taught physicians worldwide while remaining active in community service. He also supported 4-H by raising six children in the program and serving in volunteer leadership roles.
Pam Utterback, a dedicated educator, poultry expert, and proud 4-H alum, was also honored. Her interest in poultry projects during her youth led to a lifelong passion for animal sciences. Today, she serves as a senior research specialist in the University of Illinois Department of Animal Sciences. Through workshops, mentoring, and coaching judging teams, she has helped countless young people develop agricultural knowledge and leadership skills.
The Illinois 4-H Young Alumni Award, introduced in 2023, recognizes emerging leaders who have demonstrated notable professional and community accomplishments while serving as ambassadors for the Illinois 4-H program.
One of the 2026 Young Alumni Award winners is Mark Corrigan, a skilled agricultural technician, dedicated community leader, and proud 4-H alum. His involvement in leadership projects and hands-on learning inspired a career in agriculture. As a service technician with Heritage Tractor, he mentors new technicians and actively supports community organizations and local 4-H programs.
The second Young Alumni Award recipient is Rhiannon Stroud, an agricultural communicator, dedicated volunteer, and proud 4-H alumna. Her participation in livestock judging, communications, and leadership projects helped shape her career in agricultural journalism. As commodities editor for Illinois Farm Bureau, she continues to promote agriculture while encouraging youth to pursue their interests and opportunities.
Reflecting on the importance of recognizing alumni achievements, Tina Veal, Illinois 4-H Alumni and Constituent Engagement Manager, said, “One of the most meaningful parts of honoring our 4-H alumni and volunteers at the Illinois State Fair is hearing their stories and seeing firsthand the difference 4-H has made in their lives. Their experiences remind us that 4-H is so much more than a program—it helps shape confidence, leadership, resilience, and a commitment to serving others. Seeing where their 4-H journey has taken them is a powerful example of what it truly means to be Beyond Ready.”
Illinois 4-H continues to inspire future generations through leadership development, education, and community service. Nominations for the 2027 Illinois 4-H Alumni Award and Young Alumni Award will open from October 1, 2026, through March 15, 2027, providing another opportunity to recognize individuals who embody the values and mission of the 4-H program.
