Western Illinois University (WIU) has honored five distinguished alumni from its School of Agriculture for their exceptional contributions to the industry. The 2025 honorees are Edward Breece, Dawn Driscoll, Mark Herrmann, Jennifer Beard, and Darrin Dodds.
Edward Breece began his academic journey at WIU in 1954 before completing his studies at the University of Illinois. He later joined WIU’s faculty, where he served for 31 years, including 12 years as department chair.
Breece played a key role in establishing WIU’s Agricultural Education program and helped launch the Ag Expo, which continues to thrive today.
Dawn Driscoll, a sixth-generation farmer, earned her agronomy degree at WIU, actively participating in student organizations. Now in Iowa, she serves as chair of the Iowa Senate Agriculture Committee and has played a key role in passing agriculture-related legislation, including the Meat Integrity Bill.
Mark Herrmann, a 1983 Agricultural Business graduate, has made significant contributions to the global seed industry. As President and CEO of S&W Seed Company, he has led advancements in agricultural technology, having previously held leadership roles at Monsanto and AgReliant Genetics.
Jennifer Beard, a 1992 graduate, has excelled in agricultural banking and leadership. As the president and chair of Farmers State Bank in Elmwood, she has worked to empower women in banking while serving on WIU’s School of Agriculture Advisory Board. Beard credits WIU for shaping her career and leadership skills.
Darrin Dodds, a 1999 graduate, is now a professor and associate director at the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station. His research, international collaborations, and grant-funded projects have contributed significantly to agricultural advancements. He acknowledges WIU as the foundation of his career.
These distinguished alumni exemplify the excellence of WIU’s School of Agriculture and the impact of its programs on the agriculture industry. Their achievements reflect WIU’s commitment to education, leadership, and innovation in agriculture.
