North Clay FFA Moves Forward by Honoring Historic Roots

By Andi Anderson

A dusty, forgotten sign reading “Future Farmers of America” has reconnected the North Clay FFA Chapter with its past.

Discovered during a classroom relocation project, the sign prompted students and advisors to reflect on the chapter’s early days and the legacy that continues to shape their journey in agriculture.

North Clay FFA Advisor Katrina Van Dyke proudly shared the find with her students, highlighting its significance. The sign dates back to before 1988, when the national organization changed its name to the National FFA Organization.

This shift reflected the evolving nature of agriculture, from traditional farming to a wider range of agricultural careers.

The discovery came during North Clay High School’s recent classroom and shop renovations.

As students moved into the new space, they sorted through decades of memorabilia, trophies, and records. Each day brought new glimpses into the chapter’s rich history and accomplishments.

The chapter was officially incorporated into FFA in 1948. A charter preserved from that year lists 24 original student members who were the pioneers of agricultural education at the school. Their names are remembered as those who built the foundation for future generations.

Recognizing these founding members honors their dedication and reminds today’s students of the hard work and leadership that established FFA’s values. “Acknowledging those who came before us is important,” says Van Dyke, emphasizing how gratitude can fuel inspiration and pride in continuing their legacy.

The rediscovery of this old sign is more than a historic find—it’s a reminder that while the tools and techniques may change, the values of leadership, service, and growth in agriculture remain constant across generations.
