Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski of Illinois’ 13th Congressional District recently visited the National Corn-to-Ethanol Research Center (NCERC) at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. She toured the ethanol research pilot plant, met the research team, and discussed the facility’s role in biofuel innovation and expansion.
Established in 2001, NCERC has received state, federal, and private funding to develop renewable energy solutions. It specializes in producing corn hydrolysates, cellulosic ethanol, and other biofuels that contribute to the clean energy sector.
NCERC’s impact extends beyond research, focusing on commercialization and industry partnerships. The Illinois Corn Growers Association (ICGA) played a significant role in launching the facility.
According to Dave Loos, ICGA Director of Biofuels and Research, the center helps transition biofuel research from lab testing to real-world application.
During the visit, Budzinski toured the fermentation lab and met students and professionals benefiting from internship and workforce training programs.
Denise Cobb, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, emphasized the need for facility expansion to support ongoing research and industry collaborations. NCERC plans to add 15,000 square feet and invest in advanced equipment to accommodate growing client contracts.
Recognized as a Biorefining Center of Excellence, NCERC has helped commercialize over 100 biofuel technologies. The facility operates year-round, developing biomanufacturing innovations and workforce training programs.
Budzinski, a member of the Biofuels Caucus and Sustainable Aviation Caucus, supports policies that strengthen biofuel research and provide opportunities for corn growers and clean energy development. She reaffirmed her commitment to expanding biofuels in Congress to promote a sustainable future.
