New pork program by Illinois pork producers

By Andi Anderson

The Illinois Pork Producers Association (IPPA) has announced the launch of its inaugural Illinois Pork Industry Group (IL PIG) program, in partnership with Lincoln Land Community College (LLCC).

Starting on October 10, 2024, this six-week learning initiative aims to provide LLCC students with a comprehensive understanding of Illinois’ swine industry, offering them the chance to expand their professional networks and explore diverse career paths within agriculture.

Designed for students passionate about agriculture, the IL PIG program includes a series of hands-on learning sessions and expert-led discussions on various aspects of commercial pork production.

Participants will delve into topics such as animal health, industry sustainability, regulatory frameworks, and agricultural advocacy. Each session will feature a unique experience, including a free lunch, door prizes, and expert advice from seasoned professionals in the field.

Students will engage in activities like a guided tour of Borgic Farms’ sow facilities, where they will gain insights into the daily operations of a commercial pork farm.

Other sessions include an in-depth discussion on animal health, a sustainability and regulations workshop, and a speed networking event aimed at connecting students with industry professionals.

Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to visit a JBS packing plant, where they will observe the processing side of pork production, and a carcass demonstration that highlights the retail aspect of the industry.

The nine selected students for the program are Taylor Armstrong from Rushville, Nathan Brown from Hillsboro, Alaina Ford from Franklin, JoBeth Matli from Raymond, Alexis McCarty from Sherman, Kassie Ortberg from Aledo, Avery Pope from Harvel, Bailey Shields from Winfield, MO, and Jordan Shields from Winfield, MO.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a $300 scholarship, acknowledging their dedication and participation.

The IL PIG program not only aims to foster a deeper appreciation for Illinois’ pork industry but also seeks to inspire the next generation of agricultural advocates and professionals.

With a blend of practical experiences and networking opportunities, the IL PIG program is set to become a valuable addition to the educational landscape at LLCC, helping students build a strong foundation in agriculture while exploring the diverse career opportunities that the pork industry offers.
