Livestock rollover safety training for farmers

Livestock rollover safety training for farmers

By Andi Anderson

The Illinois Pork Producers are hosting a valuable training session designed to equip farmers, livestock haulers, and emergency response personnel with the skills needed to manage livestock trailer rollover accidents.

This specialized training is open to producers, livestock haulers, law enforcement, firefighters, EMS, dispatch, and emergency management agencies, providing critical knowledge to ensure safety and effective response during such incidents.

The training will take place on Saturday, October 5, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Spoon River College in Macomb, Illinois.

Led by Jamee Eggers, the session will cover important topics, including animal handling during accidents, effective scene management, and extrication techniques. Participants will also gain familiarity with livestock trailers, an essential component of managing rollover incidents.

Animal handling is one of the key skills taught in this training, as animals involved in rollovers can be stressed and difficult to manage.

Proper techniques will help reduce the risk of injury to both the animals and responders. Scene management and extrication training will focus on maintaining safety for all personnel while efficiently managing the accident site.

This event is not only for farmers and haulers but also extends to emergency responders who play a crucial role in accident situations. Law enforcement, fire, EMS, dispatchers, and emergency management professionals will benefit from this collaborative approach, which aims to improve coordination during livestock transport emergencies.

There is no cost to attend, but registration is required. Due to high demand, participants are encouraged to limit registrations to two or three attendees per agency or farm to allow broader access to the training. The deadline to register is September 30.

This hands-on training is a unique opportunity for agricultural and emergency response professionals to learn best practices for managing livestock trailer rollovers, enhancing safety for both animals and humans alike.

To secure a spot, interested participants should register promptly and take advantage of this free, essential training session.

Stay prepared and ensure your team is equipped to handle any livestock transport emergencies effectively.
