New hydraulic tech boosts tractor efficiency

New hydraulic tech boosts tractor efficiency

By Jamie Martin

A collaboration between the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Purdue University is set to revolutionize tractor technology. This partnership has introduced a hydraulic system that enhances tractor efficiency by 50% and reduces fuel consumption by 10%.

Tractors traditionally operate with a single hydraulic pressure, wasting energy through throttling. The new multipressure hydraulic system, developed by Purdue, allows tractors to use three pressure levels tailored to their needs. NREL's innovative onboard controller uses machine learning to optimize hydraulic efficiency in real time.

“Every time you throttle the pressure within a tractor hydraulic system, it’s a lost opportunity,” explained Saad Akhtar, an NREL researcher. The combined system significantly reduces energy losses, maximizing productivity while minimizing environmental impact.

Andrea Vacca, director of Purdue’s Maha Fluid Power Research Center, emphasized its uniqueness, stating, “The pressure control system developed for the project has never been attempted in agricultural vehicles.”

The innovation offers immediate benefits for the agriculture sector, which accounts for 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Improved tractor efficiency translates to reduced emissions, helping tackle environmental challenges without compromising productivity.

NREL’s controls framework also has applications beyond agriculture, including freight rail, marine vessels, and aviation. The potential for energy savings across industries highlights the wide-reaching impact of this breakthrough.
