Join WIU’s BBQ and football fest

Western Illinois University’s School of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Office of Student Engagement, invites families to celebrate Family Day on Saturday, September 28.

The event promises a day filled with delicious food, exciting activities, and football, kicking off at 1:30 p.m. during tailgating in Q-Lot.

One of the main attractions is the barbecue ribs and brisket competition, where attendees can purchase tasting tickets to sample and vote on the entries. Each competing team will also offer a special people’s choice item for tasting.

Tasting tickets are priced at $4 each, two for $6, or four for $10. For those interested in an all-inclusive experience, packages including event t-shirts, tasting tickets, and football game tickets are available at wiu.edu/familyday. This year’s t-shirts will feature a fun purple design, adding to the festive atmosphere.

In addition to the mouth-watering barbecue, the event will offer live music from the Rock'n Papas, a bags tournament, and various family-friendly activities. Attendees can also explore a selection of boutiques and vendors set up for browsing throughout the day. The event will conclude at 5:30 p.m. with the presentation of awards for the BBQ competition.

This year’s Family Day BBQ is generously sponsored by Clock Tower Community Bank, a division of Morton Community Bank, Compeer Financial, the Illinois Farm Bureau, the McDonough County Farm Bureau, Pepsi, Smithfield, Sodexo, and the Tri-County Cattlemen's Association.

Families are encouraged to come out, enjoy the food and festivities, and make lasting memories at this exciting event.
