Boost herd health at Orr beef field day

By Andi Anderson

Beef producers looking to strengthen their herd management practices are invited to the Orr Beef Research Center Field Day on September 11, 2024.

The event will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Ag Sciences Complex and Fred Bradshaw Learning Center at John Wood Community College, located west of Perry, Illinois.

Hosted by the University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences (ACES) and Illinois Extension, this event offers a valuable opportunity for producers to delve into the latest research and industry trends.

The evening will begin with a complimentary meal and welcoming remarks, followed by a series of expert presentations focusing on key topics related to herd health and management.

Field day attendees will benefit from a range of informative presentations, including:

Different Roughage Inclusions on Limit-Fed Cow Rations and Heifer Development: Dan Shike from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign will discuss how age and weight impact cow longevity and the effects of different roughage inclusions in cow rations.

Algae as a Feedstuff for Beef Cattle: Josh McCann, also from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, will explore the potential of algae as a feedstuff and the importance of hindgut digestion in beef cattle.

Artificial Intelligence Integration into Grazing Management: Isabella Condotta will present on the innovative use of AI in grazing management, offering new perspectives on herd efficiency.

Asian Longhorned Tick Update: Teresa Steckler will provide an update on the Asian Longhorned Tick and strategies for managing increasing tick pressure on cattle.

Winter Feeding Rations for Beef Cow/Calf Herds: Travis Meteer from Illinois Extension will discuss optimal winter feeding practices for maintaining herd health through the colder months.

Given the practical nature of the topics covered, this event is essential for beef producers interested in improving their operations. The event will be held indoors, ensuring a comfortable environment regardless of the weather.

Due to limited space, producers are encouraged to register in advance by contacting Travis Meteer at wmeteer2@illinois.edu or by phone at 217-430-7030. Attendees are reminded to observe biosecurity measures by avoiding wearing clothing or footwear that has been in home feedlots or pastures unless thoroughly cleaned.

This Field Day promises to provide attendees with actionable insights and strategies to improve herd health and management, making it a must-attend event for those involved in beef production.
