Illinois Invites Proposals for Specialty Crop Block Grants

By Andi Anderson

Illinois farmers and organizations are encouraged to participate in the Specialty Crop Block Grants, a program designed to fortify the local agriculture landscape. With a focus on enhancing food safety practices, conducting valuable research, and fostering the growth of the industry, these grants offer a valuable opportunity for development.

Eligible applicants include non-profit organizations, local government entities, and both public and private colleges/universities. To be considered for funding, all proposed projects must commence in the calendar year 2025.

The Department emphasizes its interest in projects that benefit smaller farms, new and beginning farmers, socially disadvantaged producers, veteran producers, and underserved communities.

Focus areas include improving the capacity of entities in the specialty crop distribution chain to comply with the Food Safety Modernization Act, investing in specialty crop research, supporting the growth of organic specialty crops, and more.

With more than 3,200 producers contributing to the $500 million in annual sales of specialty crops in Illinois, these grants play a crucial role in sustaining the industry. To learn more about the program and to submit applications, interested parties can visit the Department's website or reach out to AGR.ISCBG@illinois.gov. The deadline for applications is 11:59 pm on March 22, 2024.

Don't miss this opportunity to be a part of the local agriculture growth in Illinois. Apply for Specialty Crop Block Grants and contribute to the resilience and prosperity of the specialty crop industry.
